La próxima semana tendremos vacaciones. Coincide que se trata de una semana de descanso tras un trimestre completo, sin embargo, su origen es otro: se trata de una festividad de origen religioso, ya que España es un país con una marcada influencia católica.
De acuerdo con esta religión, mayoritaria en nuestro país, en estas fechas, que varían de año en año por seguir el calendario lunar, se celebra la muerte y posterior resurrección de Jesucristo, hijo de Dios. Puedes leer más sobre porqué las fechas varían aquí.
Otros países, y otras comunidades autónomas en España, incluyen parte del periodo vacacional en la semana siguiente, llamada Semana de Pascua. Sin embargo, en nuestra zona, los festejos comienzan el Domingo de Ramos y terminan el Domingo de Resurrección (este año 2009 del 5 al 12 de abril)
Tengas o no tengas fe, sea ésta tu religión o no, resulta muy interesante observar las procesiones que pasean por las calles de la ciudad, hombres llevando a cuestas "tronos" sobre los que se exhiben esculturas representando a los personajes bíblicos, bandas de tambores y trompetas, "nazarenos" ataviados para la ocasion y portando velas y estandartes, etc. Además de su vertiente religiosa, es un espectáculo artístico y cultural que merece la pena ver.

Next week we are having a week's holiday. Even though it is just a short break after a whole term, its origin is religious, since Spain is a country with lots of influences from Catholicism.
According to this Catholic belief, which the majority of Spaniards follow, during these days we celebrate the death and subsequent resurrection of Jesus Christ, son of God. The date varies each year, as it follows the moon calendar. You can find more information about it here.
Other countries and other regions in Spain include some days of the following week (Easter Week) within the holiday period. However, in our area, the main festivities take place from Palm Sunday to Easter Sunday (5th to 12th April this year 2009)
Whether it is your religion or not, no matter if you have faith in it or you don't, it is very interesting to watch the parades going past the streets, people suppporting floats with statues on top representing characters from the Bible, bands of drums and trumpets, "nazarenos" dressed up as required, holding candles and banners, and so on. Apart from the religious fact, it is an artistic and cultural experience worthwhile watching.
